Nottinghamshire is the UK’s tortoise-napping capital
Nottinghamshire tortoise owners beware – you are more likely to have your precious pet stolen living in the county than anywhere else in Britain. There have been six tortoise thefts in the county since 2010, coming in joint first with Guildford, in Surrey, according to missing pet website Animal Search UK. And animal charities, reptile experts and the police are urging tortoise owners to get their pet microchipped and keep them secure. Who’s Who…
Johann Ludwig (Louis) Gerard Krefft (1830 – 1881), one of Australia’s first and greatest zoologists and palaeontologists. Described the red-bellied short-necked turtle (Emydura subglobosa) Krefft is honored in the scientific names of two reptiles endemic to Australia: Cacophis krefftii, a species of venomous snake; and Emydura macquarii krefftii (Murray River turtle), a subspecies of freshwater turtle.
