Gopher Tortoise Receives a Boost in Georgia
The population of Gopher tortoise in Georgia will get a boost of 153 new specimens at Yuchi Wildlife Management Area near Waynesboro. This is the biggest release in Georgia. The current population of adult Gopher Tortoise is about 80 while it is required to have at least 250 adult to have a sustainable population. A human intervention is thus necessary. This species is a candidate for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act in the eastern part of their range.
