Sea Turtle Conservation Group Will Sue Fort Lauderdale If Necessary

In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, darkness around the beaches is a problem for businesses who say they’re losing out on potential customers because of safety concerns. Traffic is also affected in some parts. The city’s Conference Committee Agenda took up surveys to draw these conclusions. However, darkness is a very good thing for freshly hatched sea turtles. Artificial light confuses and leads sea turtles hatching to go toward the artificial light rather than the sea causing thousands of hatchlings to die each year. The city plans to spend 2 million dollars to pursue a permit to solve that problem and to improve lighting on the beach. The Response from Sea Turtle Oversight Protection‘s Richard WhiteCloud? “If they even think about a permit, we’re going to sue them with everything we’ve got.”
