Kudos to Blanca and Gustavo

It’s been nearly four years since I made the leap to move on my own all the way from my family in central Illinois to the remote southernmost tip of Texas, just a few miles from the Mexico border. As a young nineteen year-old I was not absolutely confident in my decision but decided to push forward and follow my dreams to live in a sub-tropical climate. Where I could enjoy my hobbies and interests year-round, not to mention having a place to live of my very own. It was a nerve-wracking adventure for sure, but being the determined and independent young adult that I was, I nevertheless went forward with my plans. Over the years, I have learned many lessons and made countless mistakes, but each and every experience has taught me valuable lessons and skills that I will undoubtedly use the rest of my life.

Categorized by what many people refer to as a “crazy runner”, my daily routine consists of waking up at unmentionable hours of the morning to dash through ten or more miles before the day begins. This is where I met Blanca and her husband Gustavo who have basically become my second family. They have been an amazing blessing to me throughout the years I have lived in Harlingen.

Ironically, it all began when she stopped me on the road during one of my runs, saying that she and her friend had seen me running in the dark for months, and she was wondering if my parents knew I was sneaking out at night to run! I still remember that morning, and since then, we became running partners and very close friends. She has always been more than happy to invite me into her home, even when her own life is beyond chaotic, and she is never without a fresh pot of coffee on her kitchen counter, knowing full well my addiction to good coffee. Both her and Gustavo have made me feel like family, going so far as to include me in family gatherings. I have even received texts in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm asking if I am scared and want to come over.

Thank you, Blanca and Gustavo, for being there when I needed it the most, and for supporting me through some of my toughest moments. Thank you for bringing me into your family and for your genuine thoughtfulness and love. I cannot imagine life here without you, and I know that God put you into my life for a reason. The blessing that your friendship has brought to me is an unimaginable gift, and one that I will never take for granted.
